Optimizing Diagnosis and Treatment for Patients with Peripheral T-Cell Lymphoma

OVERVIEW
Progress in the management of patients with peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs), a rare and heterogeneous disease, has been hampered by a lack of clinical trials for new and more effective therapies. With the current standard of care in the first‐line setting, control of the disease has been disappointing, with patients still experiencing frequent early relapse, with progression‐free survival (PFS) lasting less than 1 year, and their overall survival (OS) often lasting less than 2 years. However, brentuximab vedotin (BV) is a CD30‐targeted drug‐antibody conjugate that is approved for treating patients with relapsed anaplastic large cell lymphoma. Recently, the indication for BV was expanded to include the front‐line treatment of patients with CD30-positive PTCLs in combination with CHP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, and prednisone). BV plus CHP combination therapy was associated with doubling the median PFS as compared to standard anthracycline-based therapy, which shows promise in the overall management of PTCL patients. This activity will review the pathophysiology and current state of management of patients with PTCL and discusses the role of BV in the future first‐line management.

GOAL
At the end of this activity, healthcare providers should be able to appraise the utility of recently approved therapies for patients with PTCL and meld knowledge of the pathophysiology of PTCL, current guidelines, and recent clinical findings into care plans that improve patient outcomes.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This activity is intended for hematology/oncology physicians, nurse practitioners/physician assistants, and nurses, as well as other healthcare providers who are involved in the care of patients with PTCLs. No prerequisites required.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After participating in this activity, the participant will demonstrate the ability to:
  •   • IDENTIFY currently available diagnostic tools and employ these tools into the differential diagnosis of PTCL.
  •   • RECOGNIZE the presentation of PTCL and its key physiological and molecular drivers.
  •   •  FORMULATE treatment plans for patients with treatment-naïve PTCL that appropriately incorporate newly FDA-approved agents, based on recent key clinical findings.
